After a particularly gruelling CrossFit workout Kym looked down at her blistered and torn hands and said, “there must be a better way,” – Kym Rayfield, owner and founder, Just Another WOD (JAW).
JAW is the passion project of long time entrepreneur Kym Rayfield. The company is making waves in the CrossFit community with its specially designed fitness accessories.
Kym turned to CrossFit a few years ago and became an instant enthusiast. She quickly noticed a problem though the workouts weren’t just tough on the body and mind – they ripped her hands to shreds. She wanted a solution but nothing was available – she would have to do it herself.
Kym designed the ‘Pull Up Grip’ to protect her hands when she lifts weights or you guessed it… does pull ups. She knew she was onto something good when everyone at her CrossFit box asked if she would make them a pair.
Today JAW offers a wide range of CrossFit accessories including gloves, wrist wraps and finger sleeves. The brand has a warehouse in Queensland and retailers across the globe. JAW also has a number of ambassadors including some professional athletes who love and swear by her products.
“I wanted to create another innovative product but I needed money to finance the design and manufacture. My bank turned me down for a business loan – I still have no idea why,” said Kym.
Kym explored her options and came across Spotcap, the online small business lender on Google.
“I loved how easy the online application process was and that I could connect my accounting software – how easy is that?” Kym explained.
Kym was approved in no time and started work on her next product. She launched the JAW GRAP – a combination of two popular products, the Pullup Grip and the Wrist Wrap, late last year. The product was so popular that she had completely sold out within a week.
Spotcap’s investment in the business allowed Kym to employ more staff to help meet the demand. It’s only been six weeks but sales have been so substantial that Kym has already repaid 90 per cent of the loan.
“I couldn’t have done it without Spotcap. They were willing to look outside the box and help me when my bank wouldn’t,” said Kym.
Kym hopes to one day see major sports retailers embrace CrossFit and carry her product line. With the success of her recent products that’s a real possibility.
