Business Spotlight: Noble Spirits

This week we chat to Spotcap client and business owner Gregoire Bernard. Gregoire first discovered his passion for alcoholic beverages while working for the Grand Marnier liqueur brand in the UK. With years of marketing and consulting experience, he decided to make that passion his own, founding Noble Spirits in 2013.

Identifying a gap in the Australian liquor market, Noble Spirits import and distribute a range of unique wine and spirits, including premium brands SASSY and KOVAL and Grown Spirits. They have every taste covered, from french rosé to their popular Negroni and soon-to-launch Espresso Martini.

Below, Gregoire gives insights into founding his business, how Spotcap helped his journey and how he has pivoted the business during COVID-19.

Describe your company and what it does.

Noble Spirits source the most delicious, the most authentic and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to distribute to our clients.

Our mission is to enrich alcohol brand choices for consumers and bring greater value to customers. Our team is made of passionate, knowledgeable, vibrant wine and spirit people who want to make the difference and add value to the Industry.

How would you describe the experience of starting, building and running your own business?

Honestly, it’s seriously hard work. However, I would not have wanted it any other way. The ability to create something real from my original vision is priceless.

I love the fact that I can create something from scratch. I learned the full end to end discipline of how to run a business.

How have you pivoted or evolved your business during these times?

We had to downsize. This meant focusing on key customers and brands that were more suited for home consumption. We also partnered with new online retailers.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given, and what’s one piece of advice you would give to a business owner starting out?

Surround yourself with people that will complete your set of skills. Don’t be afraid to fail. You’ve got nothing to lose. Plan for the worse with enough working capital to run your business.
